What major impact did Charles V have?

  • The Peace of Augsburg (1555) allowed German princes to decide their religion (Catholicism or Lutheran) and reduced religious conflicts 

  • Under Charles V Fernando Magellan was the first to circumnavigate the world; discovery of new areas for maps

  • Spread Christianity and new treatment to indigenous people in the Americas 

  • Outlawed Luther at after Diet of Worms essentially leading to the creation of Lutheranism

What lasting impact did he make?
  • 1556 Hapsburg empire became divided because It was too scattered to rule 

  • Charles V abdicated throne to Ferdinand I and the Netherlands,Spain to his son Phillip II

  • Spain gained silver due to conquistadors that conquered the Inca and Aztec empires; became very wealthy

  • Expanded territories because of colonization that took control over the Central Americas

Did he strengthen or weaken the empire?

  • Inherited the throne at the early age of 6

  • His Father's sister, Margret of Austria, was appointed as reagent

  • His inheritance to the throne led to conflicts in controlled territories because he was accidentally inbred

  • This gave him controvertial control over certain territories in the Holy Roman Empire

  • Conceived during the 1st Italian war (won by Holy Roman Empire)

  • Result of this war gave King Charles more controlled territories
