Were there any issues regarding religion?

  • After the beginning of the Protestant Reformation (1517), Spain became the great defender of the Roman Catholic Church

  • First permanent legal basis for Lutheranism and Catholicism

  • Charles V established a provisional ruling on the religious conflict between Lutherans and Catholics, known as the Augsberg Interim

  • The Interim was later overthrown by Protestant elector Maurice of Saxony and his allies
